Custom Background: Vessari Refugee

You were born or spent a formative part of your life in the country of Vessar, a land under the rule of a group of power-hungry mages but also blessed with an abundance of magic. Living in that highly magical society, you became familiar with the arcane, and due to the constant danger of surveillance by the government, you became more vigilant and paid more attention to details than most folk. For some reason, you recently fled the country, and now find yourself in Brightshore.

Skill Proficiencies: Arcana, Investigation

Tool Proficiencies: One set of artisan's tools (your choice)

Language: One of your choice

Equipment: A set of common clothes, a trinket from your old life, a forged identification document, a boot knife, and a pouch containing 5 gp

d8 Reason for Fleeing Vessar
1 You got on the wrong side of a powerful person and now they're after you.
2 You are a follower of the Four and are fleeing religious persecution.
3 Someone close to you had already left the country and you are following after them.
4 You learned a dangerous secret that someone would kill to keep.
5 You fell on hard times and are seeking better opportunities.
6 You were involved in some less-than-legal operations and the authorities were on to you.
7 You chafed at the oppressive regime and wanted to be free of it.
8 You witnessed/were the victim of a terrible injustice that disillusioned you with the government/society.

Feature: Vessari Camaraderie. There is a certain sort of understanding between you and other Vessari refugees, having experienced firsthand the beauty and pain of living in that place. They are more willing to talk with you, more likely to be friendly towards you, and might even give you a discount, a free drink or meal, or information in exchange for news from the homeland or a spot of reminiscing.

Suggested Characteristics. Vessari society values stoicism, lawfulness, and practicality. Many who flee from there still hold to those ideals, but others take full advantage of their newfound freedom and live their lives in the complete opposite way. A few still suffer from the scars that living in Vessar inflicted on them.

d8 Personality Trait
1 If a person with authority gives me a command, my first instinct is to follow it.
2 I find other cultures and people utterly fascinating and want to learn all I can about them.
3 I collect anything and everything that seems useful. You never know.
4 I prefer listening over speaking, and observing over acting.
5 I wear my heart on my sleeve and live each day like its my last. After all, it might be.
6 I have a hard time understanding and expressing my own feelings, so I try to suppress them.
7 I love telling stories about 'the old country'. Some of them might be a tiny bit exaggerated.
8 I hate confrontation and try to avoid it as much as possible.
d6 Ideal
1 Self-sufficiency. At the end of the day, I'm the one responsible for taking care of myself. (Neutral)
2 Equality. All people deserve the same opportunity to live, grow, and be happy. (Good)
3 Justice. Evil-doers deserve punishment, and victims deserve recompense. (Lawful)
4 Power. You either step on others to get to the top, or you get stepped on. (Evil)
5 Pleasure. Why live a righteous life when you could live a fun one? (Chaotic)
6 Knowledge. It's better to know too much than not enough. (Any)
d6 Bond
1 There must be a reason that I've survived everything I've been through, but I don't know what it is yet.
2 I'm searching for someone who wronged me in the past so I can make them pay.
3 I left behind people I cared for when I left Vessar. I won't ever do that again.
4 I will eradicate tyranny and oppression wherever I find it.
5 I am determined to redeem myself for a horrible mistake I made when I was younger.
6 I sold something very important to me in order to flee Vessar and still mourn its loss.
d6 Flaw
1 Being under the effect of a spell (even a helpful one) makes me panic.
2 I hate parting with money or throwing anything away, even if it's necessary.
3 I focus on solving other people's problems so that I can continue to ignore my own.
4 I would do almost anything to be accepted as part of a group or clan.
5 I push people away when I think they are getting too close to me.
6 There's no such thing as 'charity'. Anyone who helps someone else expects something in return.
